Daniel Weidlein is an accomplished young saxophonist in the Los Angeles area hailing from Boulder, Colorado. His compositions and saxophone playing have received great praise in the jazz world and his latest project, The Vintage Modernists, has been received exceptionally well.

Also known for his work with Erik Miron, Cameron Hicks, Brandon Bae, Sam Yulsman, and many others, Daniel is quickly becoming a staple of the LA jazz scene.

Daniel also is known as a jazz educator and teaches privately as well as directing jazz ensembles at the Foshay Learning Center in South Central Los Angeles.

Daniel is a 20 year old accomplished saxophonist originally from Boulder, Colorado who currently resides in Los Angeles, California. His playing credits include: Frank Wess, Vince Mendoza, Bob Mintzer, Yosvany Terry, Ambrose Akinmusire, John Gunther, Taylor Eigsti, Clare Church, John Gunther, The Air Force Falconaires, the Thornton Jazz Orchestra, the Colorado All-State Jazz Band, The Metropolitan Jazz Band All-Stars, and the Colorado Mile High All-Stars Jazz Band.

His awards include the Stan Getz Outstanding Musician Award from the Stanford Jazz Festival, a merit award from the NFAA Young Arts national arts competition, as well as numerous awards from jazz festivals around the state of Colorado.

Daniel is currently a member of the progressive jazz trio The Vintage Modernists, plays and writes for Los Angeles hip-hop band The Cleanse, is a member of the highly acclaimed A-Capella group The Trojan Men, and recently released an album with the Denver based jazz group The Dominant Seven.

Daniel currently studies with Bob Mintzer, John Daversa, and Jason Goldman, and plays alto saxophone in the prestigious Thornton Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Bob Mintzer at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music.

Daniel is also a highly regarded music educator in both the Los Angeles and Colorado communities. He currently directs the middle school jazz band at the Foshay Learning Center in South Central Los Angeles, teaches privately, and has been a teacher at the C's in the Summer Jazz Camp in Boulder, Colorado for the past four years.

About Daniel Weidlein

Daniel Weidlein is a versatile 22 year old musician originally hailing from Boulder, Colorado. With a year remaining in his pursuit of a bachelor’s of music in jazz saxophone performance at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, Weidlein now resides in Los Angeles and works professionally as a saxophonist, composer, producer, singer, and educator alongside his studies.

As a saxophonist, Weidlein has played with jazz luminaries such as Frank Wess, Bob Mintzer, and Joshua Redman, and has made commercial appearances including on the television show “Glee” and on the third season of NBC's primetime show "The Sing Off." He also works regularly as a studio musician on saxophone, flute, and keyboards and has recorded on film scores, hip-hop tracks, and world music albums as well as jazz recordings. One such jazz recording entitled “Fourteen Channels” on the Tapestry Records label cracked the top 50 on the US Billboard jazz charts and featured Weidlein’s improvisational work as well as his composition “An Ounce of Hope.”

Weidlein’s own band, The Vintage Modernists , just released its debut album “Cityscape” to very positive reviews and can be heard on iTunes, Spotify, or anywhere else the mouse can click. His other pursuits include work as a composer where he has written everything from large group jazz pieces to film scores to a recently completed full length musical called “The Grifters.” Additionally, Weidlein works as a recording engineer and producer at the Santa Monica based Manifest Music Productions where he has produced numerous projects including albums for hip-hop sensation Clive Aden, singer/songwriter Axel Mansor , and an award winning A Cappella EP for his collegiate singing group, The Trojan Men . sdfsadfasdf;alsdfjkads;lfkj

Daniel is also a highly regarded music educator in both the Los Angeles and Colorado communities. Along with teaching privately, he formerly directed the middle school jazz band at the Foshay Learning Center in South Central Los Angeles, teaches privately, and taught at the C's in the Summer Jazz Camp in Boulder, Colorado for five years.

Daniel has been writing and producing music with Adam Berg and Itai Shapira at Manifest Music in Santa Monica, CA. Stay tuned for material to be released in the near future.

Daniel is thrilled to announce that the Vintage Modernists will be headlining Dazzle Restaurant and Lounge, Denver's premiere jazz club, on January 6th at 7 and 9PM. For more information, check out the calendar above.

12.01.10 | The Vintage Modernists Album

Daniel's trio the Vintage Modernists will be recording its debut album in the beginning of January and plan to release it late in the Spring. The recording will take place at Far and Away Studios in Boulder, Colorado.

6.17.10 | The Vintage Modernists EP

Daniel has finished recording an EP with the Vintage Modernists at Far and Away Studios in Boulder, Colorado. The EP is still in the mixing stages, but will be available some time later this year. Please stay tuned for sneak peaks at the new music.

5.20.10 | Boulder

Daniel is spending the summer in Boulder, Colorado teaching and performing in the Denver Metro Area. Please feel free to contact him for gigs in Colorado. He will return to LA in early August.

5.1.10 | Fourteen Channels

The recording Fourteen Channels on the Tapestry Records label which features Daniel prominently, including his composition "An Ounce of Hope," is 42nd on the jazz charts according to JazzWeek radio reports.

2. 2.10 | Herman Leonard

Daniel is now working as an intern in the office of legendary jazz photographer Herman Leonard. Daniel will be helping to archive the Leonard collection for the Grammy Foundation and will be helping Herman to produce new prints for his next show.
